Selling your home? The Nose Knows!
Friday, my cousin Joe treated my cousin Donna and me to a beautiful lunch at the Union League. The food was superb, the company even better, and we laughed and talked for almost 2 hours together. We were talking about disease and familial links and Joe said that we grew up in South Philadelphia and it was his opinion that we were exposed to a lot of toxins in the air by the various factories and such that spewed poison out on a regular basis. I decided that this was possible but that he needed to remember that we also stood in the fumes of the soft serve ice cream truck for more than a few minutes every summer night, waiting for our turn. "Every time my husband starts the lawn mower, I get the urge for a Mr. Softie", I exclaimed. We howled laughing and so it is. Smells bring back memories and the smell of my husband's lawn mower reminds me of soft serve ice cream!
If I am near a man who uses the old fashioned cologne, Aqua Di Silva, I think of Mr. Appa from middle school. Estee Lauder perfume reminds me of my mom, who always wore Youth Dew or Cinnabar when I was growing up. When I deliver meals on wheels on Thursdays, one of my little ladies wears Youth Dew and I always feel great when I walk in because it transports me to my childhood and warm memories of my mom. Although I am lucky to still have her, she doesn't wear Estee Lauder anymore.
I have always maintained that heaven, when I arrive, will smell like my mother's kitchen; aromatic with spices and tomatoes boiling on the stove or a roast in the oven. I love the smell of my garden flowers, most especially my butterfly bushes. The smell of the seashore, a lovely combination of salt and sunscreen is also a smell that could transport you to a happy place.
Smells are important. The nose knows! If you are selling your home, it should smell clean. It should smell like apple pie, fresh flowers and clean breezes. It shouldn't smell of stale cooking odors, unwashed dog, cigarette smoke or the kitty litter box. While I find doggie smells to be very comforting, most people would argue they are offensive. When selling your home, call a real estate agent. All homes have their own distinctive odor, and we really can't smell it on a day to day basis. Your agent will let you know what you need to do have your house smelling just right to put it on the market.

To be or not to be mortified, embarrassed, you name it! Thankful Thursday, 4/29/10
I arrived at the first house 10 minutes early, figuring I would use the time to key the other 7 homes into my GPS. The clients were already there, walking around outside. Darn, I wouldn't have time to input the other houses into GPS. The GPS came with my car and it takes several minutes to program a house when you start the car.
What transpired over the next 7 houses was something I haven't felt in a long time. They wanted to follow me. My GPS lead me on a merry chase through areas that I was as familiar with as I am in the craft supply store. Whenever I go shopping in one of those places I feel like I have been set down in a foreign land and I am the only English speaking person there. To say I am not "crafty" is an understatement. I didn't know the area well enough to attempt to ignore Gloria, the GPS, and I have absolutely no sense of direction, so I followed her meekly. It took over 3 hours to show 8 homes that really weren't that far from each other. At the 7th house, the client snarkily asked me if I'd like to follow her to the last house. Ever eager to show that I am a good sport, I suggested I should have followed her about 7 houses ago. No one esle smiled.
At the last home, I looked both women in the eyes and apologized for my seeming lack of preparation. You see, I did prepare. I mapped out the properties and wrote directions and then decided that Gloria, who is not a lady, would know better than I the way around an area I am not at all familiar with. I apologized for my GPS and for the length of time it took to show them the houses. I even sent them both a heartfelt email of apology that very afternoon.
I know that I have been more embarrassed at some point in my career, I just do not remember when! I called the investor right away and explained that I had what he could easily call an off day. I told him about every wrong turn and every detour that I encountered and every gaffe made by me and my GPS. He told me that he had assured the client that I was one of the best real estate agents around and that I knew that part of the county like the back of my hand! Ha! I'm guessing they are thinking he exaggerated. A lot. Two days later and no return emails from the client and no calls from the investor.
When I was alone in my car that day, still feeling the blood pounding in my right temple and my cheeks still splotched from embarrassment, I called my best friend. After having a good laugh at my expense she said she hoped I had said goodbye to those two nice ladies because I would never be seeing them again.
It seems she may be right.
So today, 4/29/10, one day before the tax credit expires, I will be thankful that I have had a pretty darn good 2010 so far. I may never see my investor or those two nice ladies again. I may never live down the story of how my GPS took me from Aston to Swarthmore via a very sketchy area of Chester (who knew you could put tires that size and speakers that loud on an old Cadillac). I may never loose the heat in my face when I think of how incompetent those two women must think I am. But I am still me. I am still a pretty good Realtor even if 3 folks hope to never set eyes on me again. I still always put my clients needs before my own and still work very hard every day. I will be thankful for the sunshine and the reminder that I all too human and perfectly imperfect! And I will be thankful for the listing that I got under contract an hour later and the $630,000 transaction that I put under contract later that same day. Life! Go figure!
Carpe Diem!

Meals on Wheels of Chester County
To provide a nutritionally balanced meal, warm conversation and regular saftey checks to every home-bound Chester County resident in need.
I get a lot of enjoyment out of the time I spend delivering Meals on Wheels. It's my pleasure to share a smile, sometimes a hug, usually a chuckle, with some of the recipients of Meals on Wheels. In the newsletter I learned that the senior population in our area is growing. It's grown 12% in Chester County last year. An increase in the senior population equals an increased need for volunteers. Many chapters have enough volunteers, some do not. If you have a spare 2 hours a week and would like to make a difference in someones life, call Meals on Wheels of Chester County. 610-430-8500. They are also on the web www.mowcc.org.
In addition to the New Vision Statement, there is a new Mission Statement.
Locate and reach out to all home-bound residents in Chester County with a nutritionally balanced meal five days a week and increase the number of volunteers to accommodate the growing senior population.
Last year in Chester County, 61,921 meals were served to 612 persons. 92% of these recipients were over 60 years old! Add your warm smile to a hot meal and make the day a little brighter for someone. Call Meals on Wheels today.
To volunteer, or to receive meals, call today.
